Rock'n'roll was in late 50's already in ex Yugoslavia. But how it really was back then - I don't know. I was born in 70's and first 60's records I ever saw were records of my parents - Bijele Strijele, Crveni Koralji, The Beatles and ofcourse The Rolling Stones. But that happened in early 80's when I was a teenage girl, when POWER POP and PUNK brought back some of that 60's sound. Anyway I was infected with this 60's virus, and as you can see I'm still not cured - probably it's the same with you.
Ex Yugoslavia was socialistic country. But as far as I know rock'n'roll was always part of youth culture there. Maybe I have to say "thank you" to Lemmy (MOTORHEAD) and his first band THE ROCKING VICKERS who were also the first foreign band to tour ex Yugoslavia in 1965 or 1966. Anyway during their tour LEMMY met TITO - what they were talking about I don't know - maybe they just blew some joints together. Sometimes destiny can be a bit cynical - Lemmy and Motorhead were the last foreign band which came to my hometown before the war started and my country became ex.
I try to collect as much info about jugobeat bands as possible, but it's not easy. It's impossible to find out how many records were released in that time in ex Yugoslavia or how many bands existed. Many bands never released a record. Some recorded songs for national TV or radio. In that time Yugoslav TV couldn't afford foreign bands as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and others, so local bands got the chance to appear on TV in stead of them.
60's scene in ex Yugoslavia wasn't so big like in some other continental countries, but there were lot of great bands which don't deserve to be forgotten. That's the main reason I'm making this site and if you can help me or if you need some information or if you just want to hear some of these bands - feel free to send me e-mail.
