I don't know much about Res Nullius. They are quite new band. They started
in 1991. I was lucky to see them live in some small squat club in Utrecht.
They were so good that I was under strong impressions for few days. I remember
I felt the same when I heard their 1st album "No One Can Like The Drummer
Man" (1993).
"Be Bop!" opens this great album. It's like Stooges on speed with
walls of fuzzy wah wah guitar and really great vocal. Next song "Money's
talking" is slow heavy acid number. Res Nullius are also inspired with
late 60s & early 70s Detroit sound. They don't want to hide it. They
just play their favorite kind of music and add something new - they give
their own vision - and that's what I like about many bands from former
Yugoslav countries. So Iggy part I & II are probably ode to Iggy Pop.
"Paraliza" (Paralysis) is punk as well as "Mama" and "Zadnji val" (Last
Wave) again with nice acid guitar solo. "Ona in mi" (She & We) is the
best song from this album. It's great heavy funk with wah wah guitar and
pumping bass. I don't like funky at all - maybe few songs from Parliament
and here and there something - but "Ona in mi" is really crazy. You can't
do anything but start to dance and jump - you just have to move your ass.
"Daddy Killed My Fetish" and "Optic Deformation" are ok, maybe little bit
strange, I could say a little bit experimental. Album ends with slow and
bit boring "Miki" and free jazzy & experimental "Ultraslovan".

Res Nullius' 2nd album "Dead Town Dogs" (1995) starts with great punk
song "Screaming on The Wild Street". "R'N'R Dog" is great high energy rock'n'roll.
"Love Sea and The Boat" is again trippy & acid, but fast - Stooges
on speed song. "Dead Town Dogs" is very good album and there is no oscillations
between songs. Still I miss the craziness of some songs from 1st album.
"Straight to The Hell" is bit slowly followed by garage punk song "Run
Down Secret". "Drunk in The Dusty Town" is fast rhythm & blues - this
time we have Rolling Stones on speed - ha ha ha. I don't understand why
Res Nullius put "Be Bop" again on their 2nd album. There is slight difference
from version we got on 1st album - but my opinion is that this was really
not necessary. "Colored by The Sky" is very chaotic, but "Party Doll" is
nice piece of blues with great slide guitar and wall of fuzzy wah wah guitar
again. I really like this one. The last song is heavy & slowly "Dreamin'
Bizzare". As I said - "Dead Town Dogs" is nice album. All songs are good,
but you can't find the favorite one. Also I think everything could be better
if songs were bit shorter.
Res Nullius also have 3rd album "Zdravo je biti divlji" (It's Healthy
to Be Wild) (1997), produced by Miro Kusacic from Messerschmitt. I read
nice critics about it, but unfortunately I still didn't hear it. |
