Majke (The Mothers) were formed in 1984. They are together with Partibrejkers
one of the most important bands for garage punk explosion in ex-Yugoslav
countries. The specific sound of late 60s Stones mixed with MC5 noise and
77 style punk became the biggest influence for hundreds of new bands. We
can really speak of big garage punk explosion all over ex country. Bands
were everywhere playing that typical ex-yu garage punk - very raw, very
trashy with that magical 'old fashion' echoes.
Anyway after many gigs, appearing on famous festivals as Omladinski
Festival (Youth Festival) in Subotica and Novi Rock (New Rock) in Ljubljana,
Majke release their first tape in 1987 for independent label Slusaj Najglasnije/Listen
Loudest. This is also first issue of that really great label. The tape
begins with song 'Iz sve snage' (With All Power) and really from the beginning
till the end we get pure metallic guitar sound we already know from our
Stooges records. The big wall of guitar noise, pumping bass and driving
drums bring you in the apocalyptic world of youth from country which is
already in war. No future, life without dreams, full of fear and pessimism
- we are locked in and songs like Bad Life (Los zivot), Alone (Sam), Dazed
and Confused (Zbunjen i osamucen) and You Can't Go Anywhere (Nemas kuda
da odes) are nothing else than terrible reality of thousands of ex-yu teenagers.
Three years later - after they toured almost every small club and
place - Majke release long play record 'Razum i bezumlje' (Reason and Unreasonableness).
There are lot of songs from their first tape, but this time recorded in
proper studio. Sound is just a little bit colder than before. It is very
subjective, but I heard that first tape billion times and I got used on
all these songs. So I expected only new material. Anyway - it was nice
to have some old songs On vinyl too. Here we have 6 new songs which are
also great. My favorite is 'Lutak iskrivljenog lica' (The Doll with Distorted
Face -- I hope I translate it good).
Majke had pretty
various gigs. Sometimes they were great and sometimes they couldn't play
at all. At least few good friends of mine say so. They saw them many times
live - I only once (cos they came only once to my town). They were really
great then. It is one of the best gigs I ever saw. It was on University,
just in the main hall. No light show, no PA - only amplifiers, also for
voice. Majke were pretty drunk, etc... They also had new guitar player
- old one died in car accident. The singer was very drunk and stoned and
he couldn't stand properly on stage, but he sung great. Guitars had that
fat sound - and solo guitar was so acid - straight to your brain. Everything
sounded like it will fall apart - like they walk on some thin line between
life and death. Very strange atmosphere, morbid, sick and at the same time
great - you know what I mean - when your flesh creeps. So it was 1990.
The end of my youth and many other things.
The war started just few months later. Majke stopped for few years.
Their solo guitarist and writer of all these early songs joined Hare Krishna.
In 1992 the rest of band starts again with new members. Their 2nd album
'Razdor' (Division) didn't come close to their early stuff. Now they sound
like some ordinary 70s hippy/hard rock band. They became very popular -
the most famous band in Croatia and very very popular in other ex-Yu countries,
also in Serbia.
But their new stuff is not so good to me anymore. They lost that
magic from before. I don't know, they are not punky anymore - too slow
for my taste. I have to be honest - they still have here and there a great
song, but it's not the same anymore.
