Elektricni
Orgazam (Electric Orgasm) started in January 1980 as punk band. On the
youth festival in Subotica they made big scandal with their violent behavior
- they broke decoration - 'cos they didn't like fucking festival kitsch
look. After that they weren't aloud to play on the festival anymore. In
the beginning of 1981 they recorded together with bands Idoli and Sarlo
Akrobata - famous punk LP "Paket Aranzman". Soon after that they put out
their first album for Jugoton. Kris Bohn (New Musical Express) writes about
them like the most interesting non british band. This record was also to
buy in England. In autumn 1981 they tour Poland. Part of concert in Warsaw
was put out on mini lp "Warszawa '81" (in 1996 they put whole concert on
cd with same title). During song "Konobar" the sound breaks down and somebody
from the audience throws tear gas. All that chaos you can hear on the record
too. Their next record "Lisce prekriva Lisabon" (Leaves over Lisbon) was
more experimental (new wave) than punk. After that they were touring a
lot. Their next record "Les Chansones Populaires" is all-cover-lp. They
did 8 covers - their visions of music they liked as kids - stuff as Bowie,
Doors, T.Rex, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground... This lp showed 60s
side of Elektricni Orgazam. After that record their sound changed more
to garage rock. Also on their gigs they played lot of 60s covers. "Kako
bubanj kaze" (As the Drum Says) is their worst record. After that record
there were some personal changes in band. Ljubo - keyboard and lead vocal
and author of many of Orgasam's songs left the band. Gile - guitar and
also lead vocal and author of many songs - changed style to pure garage
punk. Their next record "Distorzija" (Distorsion) is really one of the
best yugo rock records. Almost every song is hit. They smelted late 60s
Stones r & b sound together with punk energy and great power pop melodies.
Here and there they added some psychobilly spices and Acid Rock magic.
With this record they became very popular in whole Yugoslavia. Many gigs
during 1986 and 1987 results with "Braco i sestre" (Brothers and Sisters)
live album which catches live atmosphere of E. Orgazam pretty good. Behind
this hippy title we have one great live garage punk record.
And how it often happens in garage music after 1966 (sorry 1986)
comes 1967 - the summer of love - oops, I mean 1987. So you can guess what
kind of music Elektricni Orgazam played on their next record called "Letim,
sanjam, disem" (I Fly, I Dream, I Breathe) - it wasn't very difficult,
I think, to suppose they became psychedelic. I like "Letim, sanjam, disem"
album. It's not so great record as "Distorzija" but I think it's more question
of taste. So if you prefer pop psyche stuff more than punk - maybe this
is the best Orgazam's record for you. Anyway with song "Igra rokenrol cela
Jugoslavija" (All Yugoslavia Dance Rock'n'Roll) they had their greatest
hit.
After that - they made long pause (4 years).
In the meantime Cavke - the drummer also acted in TV rock opera "Kreatori
i kreature" (Creators and Creatures) and worked on making of movies "Crna
Marija (Black Maria) and "Kako je propao rokenrol" ("How Rock'n'Roll was
Destroyed). Gile - singer appeared in film "Crni bombarder" (Black Bomber).
Before the war burst out, I saw them last time live in the beginning
of 1992 just few weeks before I left my hometown forever. They were great
and I almost forgot all that horror shit around me. I never heard their
next albums "Sex, droga, nasilje i strah/Balkan Horror Rock" (Sex, Drugs,
Violence and Fear/Balkan Horror Rock) and "Balkan Horror Rock II". Double
album "Zasto da ne" (Why not) is very strange record. It's pretty psychedelic
and crazy, but in one very strange way. I still don't know what to tell
you about this record. Songs are very different and sometimes you have
feeling that you don't listen to the same band but to some various artists
record.
In 1994 Cavke had also role of Marc Boland in play "Zigi - Zvezdana
prasina" (Ziggy - Stardust). He also acted in film "Geto - tajni zivot
grada" (Ghetto - Secret Life of the City), about Belgrade in 1995. Then
he moved to Tasmania (Australia) where he died in 1997. Gile (vocal and
guitar) made in late 80s also 2 records with Vlada (ex - Idoli). They call
it rock'n'roll for children. Those 2 records are also very strange. They
played children songs in garage punk/power pop/psyche style. I think that
Vlada and Gile "Rokenrol za decu" (Rock'n'Roll for children) is really
great record.
Anyway, after Cavke's death it seems it's finished with Elektricni
Orgazam. They were one of the greatest ex-yugo bands. They made lot of
records - pretty different and all I can say at the end about them is fucking
boring Jagger's verse "It's only rock'n'roll but I like it".
